5 Productivity Tips for Your Desk. And 2 Desk Tips for Productivity.
A few months ago, we highlighted some Unruh desks for you and your hardworking friends and family. Before describing the desks in detail, we noted the desks of six famous individuals and why their desk meant so much to them. Such a notion, that one’s sacred space – for work, play, hobbies and more – could take place at a personal piece of wood, begs the question: does society still value the desk? Certainly, the average American is busier than ever with an increasingly short attention span. But at Unruh, we know the value in a good desk and what it can mean to you as an individual, or for someone you love that desires his or her own space.
We’ll get to a three desk options and why each would make sense for your home. But we’d first like to offer a few quick tips on desk productivity. Why focus on productivity? Because, culturally, we are also more distracted than ever before. (Feel free to reference the attention span infographic once more). There are many sources of distraction that we could blame: technology, time, family, friends, etc. But instead of blaming this or that, we think productivity gets at the real opposite of distraction: traction. Think about it. Dis . . . traction. If you have set modes of productivity in place, you might be a little less likely to linger. How does a decade of productivity sound? Only one way to find out.
1. Keep a Calendar
This is one of the easiest ways to eliminate distraction. But it takes time to form this habit! There are plenty of journals out there for keeping a daily calendar, and you could also opt for a desk-version. But if you reach an hour time-slot in your day that is free and open, you are much more likely to drift to something easy and mindless like social media or daydreaming.
2. Silence the Notifications
After you’ve scheduled your day and sit down for work, one phone call from a best friend can throw everything off. Silence your phone and other devices when you sit down to work or create.
3. Chew Gum
You know what’s better than chewing pencils or even your nails? Gum. Studies have shown that gum to prove better concentration for longer periods of time. Our two gum suggestions: sugar-free, and anything other than Juicy Fruit if you enjoy long-lasting flavor.
4. Noise Cancelling Headphones
One great use of increased technology is the advent of wireless, noise-cancelling headphones. Of course, you can get just wireless headphones or just noise cancelling headphones. This is simply to alert you that wireless headphones that are also noise-cancelling do exist.
5. Go On a Walk
We’ve talked about the importance of a good walk on the blog, but it’s always a good reminder. The winter months are sometimes tough for this as reality, but you can always bundle up for a jaunt around the block. A periodic walk will clear your mind and sit you back down ready for production.
“I bought a desk for my home office from Unruh and I love it. The showroom does a great job of showing you what they have. I love the fact that you can customize much of the product you choose. The quality is awesome, the price value is exceptional and the customer service is outstanding! Could not be happier with this company and glad they are in suburban KC!” -Pete Malone
Mid Century Desk
As for the “two desk tips” that our title promises? We give you two Unruh desks, of course. Starting with our popular Mid Century Desk, the tip is simple in that one’s personal space leads to a higher sense of ownership, creativity and empowerment in his or her work. If the recipient of this gorgeous Mid Century Desk is even a tad-bit old-fashioned, don’t hesitate to suggest this mid century modern furniture during your showroom appointment. We would love to customize accordingly to the desire of its new owner.
Holton Desk
If you’re looking for something a little more traditional, our Holton Desk is the option for you. Two small-but-nifty drawers highlight the center of this desktop. And it’s clean lines and smooth edges will carry its owner the long-haul. Guaranteed. Whether the Mid Century, Holton or any of our other desk options, you won’t go wrong in solidifying a new creative space for 2020 and beyond. In the end, it’s not about “bringing back the desk,” but it is about the general sentiment: a space to take one’s work seriously.
