Modern Bed Frames
Interior design has changed quite a bit in the last decade. People are tired of clunky, dark bed frames and have moved toward more modern, contemporary bed frames to fit their style.
Now bedrooms are filled with natural light and blonde-colored wood. Bed frames are being valued for added design, not just the functional purpose of holding a bed.
Below I have listed four ways to get your bedroom looking updated and modern. Since the bed is the biggest focal point in a bedroom, picking the right bed frame will help set the tone of the room. If you are wanting to go more modern in your bedroom design, look keep these design tips in mind:
1. Choose a Lighter Wood Option
The easiest way to give your bedroom a facelift is to pick wood furniture that is lighter in color. While dark brown or even espresso-toned wood has been favored in the past, Scandinavian design has really taken over the wood industry. Scandinavian design favors blonde-toned wood paired with other neutrals like grey and white.
Modern design also favors natural light. Whereas bedrooms used to be dark and curtained, now we are seeing more and more bedrooms with huge windows. Lighter wood options fit a lot better in natural light settings. While dark-toned wood looks a lot harsher in natural sunlight, natural-toned wood makes the room feel lighter and more peaceful with all the sun rays.

But, I love Dark Wood!
We aren’t saying that dark stained wood can’t be modern, but natural stains make it easier to have a modern-looking bedroom. Especially because bed frames are usually a huge piece of furniture. The sheer mass of bed frames makes it all the more important to design them with intention. When bed frames are designed with a dark stain, it overtakes the room. Choosing a lighter stain can help the room feel more open and not so cramped.
At Unruh, we offer natural options for each of our wood species. This means we do not stain the wood but put a clear coat of our finish on top of the wood. This way the wood is the lightest possible. In terms of blonde-toned options from Unruh, natural oak or alder wood seems to be a favorite. If you don’t like the grain of the ash, go with natural walnut for a darker, but still lovely natural tone.
Even if your bedroom doesn’t get a lot of natural light, like the picture below, a natural-toned bed frame will make the space feel lighter and more contemporary.

2. Go With a Platform Option
Another easy way to get your bedroom to look modern is to go with a platform option. Platform bed frames are usually more minimal in design, which translates as more modern.
Platform bed options also feel slightly more casual than the typical bed frame. They don’t sit so high off the ground like traditional bed frames. The headboard styles for Unruh’s platform beds are very simple, which adds to the modern feel.

The drawers can also add a more modern touch to your bed frame, especially when they are customized with the cutout handles. 3. Pick a Frame with Clean Lines
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: clean lines. This is an easy tell if you are wondering: is this piece of furniture modern? If it is designed with clean lines or straight edges, that is a good indication that it is modern.
Traditional design has more indentations in the woodwork, whereas modern design favors right angles and pieces that do not have any overhang. This applies to bed frame legs too! A more modern piece would not have rounded legs, but clean-lined legs like the picture below.

4. Choose Mixed Materials
Choosing a bed frame that doesn’t have only wood is another way to create a more modern bedroom. Adding another texture to a room helps complete the look, especially if you already have a lot of wood furnishings.
If you are a more industrial modern type, working in metal whenever possible is best. Lucky for you, we have a bed frame that has a metal base and legs. This wood, metal combo is pretty common because they compliment each other so well. Even though metal is dark it provides a frame for the wood, which is slimming since it is used minimally.
