Do you really make furniture in a church?
Yeah, we really do. We started in a garage, then moved to a warehouse, then a bigger warehouse, and last fall we bought an old, abandoned church in Midtown. We renovated the whole thing beginning November of 2015 through September of 2016, and we are now fully operational inside the Westminster Congregational Church, which was built in 1904, and located at 3600 Walnut Street, Kansas City, MO 64111. You can learn more about how that came to be on the Our Story Page.
How long will it take to get my piece of furniture?
Everything we make is from scratch so there is a bit of wait time. From the day you book an order, to the day it’s ready for delivery/pickup, you are looking at 10 – 12 weeks. And, of course, you are always welcome to check in with us on the status and timing of your order. And if you’re in a big hurry, make sure to ask about our Rush Fee.
What type of wood species do you use?
We exclusively use solid hardwoods for everything we make – and that’s really what you want in furniture. The big box stores are notorious for gluing a very thin (1/32-inch) piece of hardwood to a very cheap and lightweight type of plywood. Not the case here. If you order a table in Hickory, it will be Hickory through and through, which means it is heavy, sturdy, and durable enough to take on the tests of time, kids, applesauce, dinner parties, and homework. The wood species we currently offer are Alder, White Oak, Maple, Cherry, Hickory, and Walnut. We carefully hand select every board for each project, ensuring the final piece has perfect charm and personality. Due to the specific way we craft our furniture, we do not accept customer supplied wood.
What type of finish do you use?
After a vigorous sanding process, we stain our furniture by hand with a cloth, then spray on several coats of a high-end, eco-friendly, water-based lacquer. Our topcoat finish is very durable and, unlike cheap oil-based products, ours doesn’t yellow over time. We use a satin base, so you won’t see a gloss in the light. You can clean the furniture with soap and water or standard furniture cleaners.
How did you get into furniture making?
Sam Unruh: I started this business in my garage with a passion for making beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces from the boards up. In 2008, I was working a job I didn’t love and my wife was a few months pregnant with our first. She encouraged me to quit what I was doing and start making furniture for a living. I thought she was crazy (and still do) but I did it and over time it turned into a business. I now have 18 full-time employees and we genuinely love what we do. It’s a great job and a great life.
What does your Warranty look like?
We take great pride in everything we make here at Unruh Furniture. The quality and craftsmanship of our work is our top priority, and we stand behind everything we sell. If you have any problems with your furniture at any time, whether it’s our fault, your fault, or your dog’s fault, we will take care of it at no cost. And that offer will never expire.
How does the Unruh Furniture buying process work?
We book all orders with an easy $199 deposit. Once you book, you have 7 days to finalize your order. Booking with a deposit immediately places your order in our schedule so you can receive your furniture faster, and it allows a week for any changes. And if you walk out with buyer’s remorse, you are welcome to cancel any part of your order within that week and we’ll give you a full refund.
Can I visit without an appointment?
We always prefer for our clients to make an appointment so we can ensure you have a tour guide ready for you. Without an appointment, we cannot guarantee an employee will be available to give you a tour of walk you through our process.
Where can I buy Unruh Furniture?
Unruh Furniture is only available from Unruh Furniture. Our furniture is not sold by any other retailer. You buy directly from us. Having no “middle-men” allows us to sell high-quality, custom, handmade furniture at very reasonable prices.
