Got Questions?We have Answers.
Do you really make furniture in a church?
Yeah, we really do. We started in a garage, then moved to a warehouse, then a bigger warehouse, and last fall we bought old, abandoned church in midtown. We renovated the whole thing from November 2015, through August of 2016 and we are now fully operational inside the Westminster Congregational Church, built in 1904.
How did you get into furniture making?
Sam Unruh: I started this business in my garage with a passion for making beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces from the boards up. In 2008, I was working a job I didn’t love and my wife was a few months pregnant with our first. She encouraged me to quit what I was doing and start making furniture for a living. I thought she was crazy (and still do) but I did it and over time it turned into a business. I now have seven full-time employees who have become great friends. We spend the week together, handcrafting pieces from scratch and genuinely love what we do. It’s a great job and a great life.
What does your Warranty look like?
We take great pride in everything we make here at Unruh Furniture. The quality and craftsmanship of our work is our top priority, and we stand behind everything we sell. If you have any problems with your furniture at any time, whether its our fault, your fault, or your dog’s fault we will take care of it at no cost. And that offer will never expire. What type of wood do you use?
We exclusively use solid hardwoods for everything we make – and that’s really what you want in furniture. The big box stores are notorious for gluing a very thin (1/32-inch) piece of hardwood to a very cheap and lightweight type of plywood. Not the case here. If you order a table in Hickory it will be Hickory through and through, which means it is heavy, sturdy, and durable enough to take on the tests of time, kids, applesauce, dinner parties and homework. The wood species we currently offer are Alder, Red Oak, Maple, Cherry, Hickory, and Walnut. We carefully hand select every board for each project, ensuring the final piece has perfect charm and personality.Due to the specific way we craft our furniture we do not accept customer supplied wood.
Where can I buy Unruh Furniture?
Unruh Furniture is only available from Unruh Furniture. Our furniture is not sold by any other retailer. You buy directly from us. Having no “middle-men” allows us to sell high-quality, custom, handmade furniture at very reasonable prices.
Do you deliver your furniture?
We deliver our furniture all over the Kansas City metro area, or if you prefer, you are welcome to pick up your order from us at our location.
How long will it take to get my piece of furniture?
Everything we make is from scratch so there is a bit of wait time. From the day you book an order to the day it’s ready for delivery/pickup you are looking at 8 – 10 weeks. And of course you are always welcome to check in with us on the status and timing of your order. And if you’re in a big hurry make sure to ask about our Rush Fee.
How does the buying process work?
Buying furniture from Unruh is easy. You can buy online, here on our site. Just add one or several pieces to your shopping cart and checkout. We accept all major credit cards.
You can also come to our showroom in person, place an order and pay with credit, cash, or check. We book most orders with a $199 deposit, per piece. Once you book, you have 7 days to finalize your order. Booking with a deposit immediately places your order in our schedule so you can receive your furniture faster, yet allows a couple of weeks for any changes. You can schedule a showroom visit here.
Can I make special requests?
Absolutely. When you buy on our website, we follow up with a personal email that includes your invoice and all of your details. You have the ability to reply back to that email with a special request (i.e., “Can you cut a hole for power cords?” or “Can you paint the doors Antique Cream and the rest Deep Mocha?”). We are happy to fulfill those type of requests.
What type of finish do you use?
After a vigorous sanding process, we stain our furniture by hand with a cloth, then spray on several coats of a high-end, eco-friendly, water-based lacquer. Our topcoat finish is very durable and, unlike cheap oil-based products, ours doesn’t yellow over time. We use a satin base, so you won’t see a gloss in the light. You can clean the furniture with soap and water or standard furniture cleaners.
Do you accept custom orders?
We sure do. If you have a photo or sketch of something not shown on our site, we would be happy to take a look at it and let you know if it’s something we can do. You can either fill out the Custom Quote section of our Contact Form or shoot an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
