About Myself

More than furniture.

Really, what's the point of blogging if you're not going to talk about yourself. Here's me:

"My name is Sam and I own a custom furniture shop" is what I normally say when people ask me about myself. I realized recently that I almost always talk about my work when I talk about myself. I also decided recently that I want to change that a little.

So here's me apart from work:

Earliest best memory //
My parents bought a home that had a tree house in the backyard when I was a little kid. They might as well have bought Heaven for all I knew. That treehouse injected a lot of wonder into me. It helped me to think and dream and want bigger (higher).

Earliest worst memory //
I think I was 6 or 7 and standing in line for the diving board at the Red Bridge Pool when an older, slightly pudgy kid turned around to tell me I talked funny. He said I had a lisp, and I never forgot.

High School //
High School was tough for several reasons, but mostly it was the lisp. The older I got the bigger it became to me. By the time I was a sophomore I found a way to just not say words that had S, SH, or J sounds, which is almost all words so I just didn't talk very much. Having to tell people my name always felt like a bad joke. In the middle of senior year I pulled the trigger on speech therapy and my whole life changed (I ended up majoring in Public Speaking in college).

Camp Barnabas //
A couple days after high school ended I drove to Southern Missouri to work at a Christian camp for kids with special needs. It sounds noble saying it, but in reality it was just perplexing because I wasn't a Christian and I didn't care about kids with special needs. I'm still not sure why I went, but two weeks in I became a Christian, fell in love with Jesus and kids with special needs. I worked the next five summers there, and spent the majority of the fifth summer convincing the girl I'm now married to to like me.

The girl I'm married to //
Hayley is easily a better person than me. And a lot prettier than I am handsome. I fell for her because she was so pretty and I guess I just got lucky in that she also has a really good heart. She is passionate about several things, but mostly our kids. We have three little girls: Emma is almost three and right now she is probably my best friend apart from Hayley. Aubrey and Ellie are 14 months and remarkably beautiful and funny and fun to be around. They are all like their mom and I couldn't be happier about that.

Other Stuff //
I still love Jesus. It seems harder to sit with him now that I have a wife and kids and a business, but we are still close and I know that I know that I know that he loves me. I like camping and ice cream and I have a man-crush on LeBron James. My wife and I just went to see Trainwreck on opening night solely because LeBron had a cameo role. I thought he did great. I'm not funny all that often but when I am funny I like the feeling; its probably because it means I'm comfortable around whoever I'm around. And if I could say one thing about my work it would be that I really like it because I really like the people I work with. That's all.
